As with any type of movie, the characters can make or break a film. Extra precautions must be taken when dealing with remakes:
-Actors cannot mimic previous actor's role
-Audience must care about characters
-New characters/takes on characters that audience can invest in are welcome

Directed by Zack Snyder, Man of Steel aimed to reboot the Superman film franchise in 2013. The previous film series began with Richard Donner's Superman: The Movie in 1978 and ended with Bryan Singer's Superman Returns in 2006.
WHAT IT DID WRONG: The new take on Superman's character is absent of any charm
Lois Lane is stripped of the quirkiness that made her likable
The "romance" is just slapped into the script
Forgettable side characters
Little development for most characters. Just dialogue
WHAT IT DID RIGHT: Kevin Costner and Diane Lane were likable as Clark's parents

Well hello again. Fancy seeing you here.
WHAT IT DID WRONG: Gives a large roster of side characters
Mr. Hayes, the father figure of Jimmy, is more stern than loving
The romance starts off as a crush with some stares and awkward stares here and there Twilight-style....
WHAT IT DID RIGHT: But then interestingly transforms into more of a partnership
Gives each side character moments for development
Most characters have a backstory
Characters far more fleshed out than original
New take on Carl Denham based on original's director Cooper
New character motives reveal man to be the cause of the chaos
-Jackson in airplane cameo for metaphor
